Bro. David's Notes:  Update 02/15/07

  • Gambling:   Prov. 28:8 …20….Isaiah 10:1,2 …I Tim. 6:9,10
    Exodus 20:17..Thou shalt not covet..

Gambling is not acting on faith, nor is gambling simply taking a risk…gambling is taking an artificial risk for hope of excessive gain far beyond what investment of time, money or skill would justify.

  • The Ten Commandments:  The battle over the Ten Commandments is not finished in Kentucky...

Areas Impacted by the Expansion of Gambling:   David Carr

Our communities are facing a tremendous trial and challenge from the Gambling Industry who will try and rob our communities of its economy and morals.  They will heavily lobby our Legislators every year to legalize the expansion of gambling.  It is of utmost importance you understand the issue and encourage your Representatives to always vote against the expansion of gambling.

There are 4 areas that will be heavily impacted by the expansion of gambling. Number One:  The Family…Why?  Because mothers and fathers can gamble…not businesses, corporations, institutions, schools churches, etc.  Thus, all the money the gambling interests want to “give” to government will come directly from Kentucky families.  Number Two:  Business…because as hundreds of millions of dollars will be sucked from the economy by the hugh proposed expansion, there will be fewer funds available to be spent at businesses.  Number ThreeGovernment - because, given the size of the expansion, the gambling industry will become the most powerful lobbying force in the state.  Number Four:  The Vulnerable…many gamblers (not all, but many), will be drawn into a gambling mire and lose big.  Then they will lose “even bigger” through stress, child abuse, spouse abuse, divorce, indebtedness, bankruptcy, depression, suicide, etc.

Donald Trump, a Casino  owner, interviewed by the Miami Herald said,  “People will spend a tremendous amount of money in casinos, money they would normally spend on buying a refrigerator or a new car.  Local businesses will suffer because they lose customer dollars to casinos.”

Warren Buffett, an international investment advisor, said this as well: “It’s a terrible way to raise money (for government).  It’s a tax on ignorance! ... I don’t like the idea of government depending, for certain portions of its revenue, on hoodwinking citizens!”

Robert Goodman, Ph.D, Hamshire College said, “Most of the people pouring money into their {casino} slot machines will be local residents.  Instead of bringing new dollars to the local economy, gambling will siphon away consumer dollars from other local businesses.”

Nelson Rose, Professor of Whittier School of Law contributes to the criticism by saying, “A casino acts like a black hole, sucking all the money out of the local economy.”

The Bible encourages a Christian and his community to … “labor, working with our own hands…I Corinthians 4:1.  The Bible continues to encourage us by saying, “Let him stole, steal no more: but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.” Ephesians 4: 7, 8.

In conclusion, a 1997 nationwide SMR Research Corporation study showed that bankruptcies were 18% higher in counties with one gambling facility and 23% higher in counties with five or more, when compared to counties with no gambling facilities.  In South Dakota after two years of legalized casino and slots play, gambling was one of the leading causes of business and personal bankruptcy.  Here are some examples to where gambling may take you.  A Louisville man stole $130,000 from a dentist and spent over $200,000 at Churchill Downs and casinos over a two year period, according to police documentation. … A Missouri student loan officer embezzled $30,000 from a community college.  A 61 year old Louisville resident embezzled $493,180 from the US Postal Service and lost it at Caesars’ in Indiana.  The Keifer, Oklahoma town clerk embezzled over $250,000 to play Bingo, losing up to $2,000 per night.  Family members repaid the money to prevent the community from having its gas and electricity cut off.  Should I say anything else?  This is a very serious matter!
